Cattleya elongata

Cattleya elongata - Plant photo by Richard LindbergThe genus Cattleya (C) contains quite a few species from tropical South America. They do best in a medium that has good drainage and dry between watering. Give them a short dryer rest after blooming.

Cattleya elongata grows in Brazil in Minas Gerais and Pernambuco. It is a lythophyte, cool to warm growing and fragrant. It needs bright light and blooms in late summer.

This plant is in sphganum over peanuts in a 4-inch clay pot. It has good roots and several pseudobulbs with two leads. It is still a couple of years from blooming size.
